Fourteen young people on Team Nanoq from Nuummi Naluttartut Klubbiat – Nuuk Swimming Club, went to Reykjavík in January 2022 where they participated in the Reykjavik International Games and training camp.

The trip to Iceland is the highlight of the year for the swimmers. In 2021 the trip was canceled due to Corona and this year Corona also played a major role. While the Omicron variant was spreading in Greenland, the young people tried to avoid getting infected. When the team reached Reykjavik – delayed by a couple of storms – there still was infection in the group, just like so many other places in Greenland and Iceland. With kind help from the Icelandic authorities, the infected were isolated – which was of course a very big disappointment for them. All the others were tested negative and traveled back home to Nuuk shortly after, just to be sure not to be affected more of the Corona situation. But the plane was overbooked, and a small group of the elders remained in Reykjavík.

By chance – and a few more days of stormy weather – the elders managed to enter the competitions. They represented Greenland in the best way with personal records and medals – also they met with swimmers from Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark.

Despite the extremely difficult circumstances because of Covid-19, the leaders at Nuuk Swimming Club are proud that the trip was completed and that the club got good results. Despite the circumstances, the experience has given the young people close relationships and a mutual history.
