Why go to iceland?

Iceland has a truly unique landscape. The island is located in a volcanic “hotspot” on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which has formed – and indeed continues to shape – the landscape. You can visit the famous “Geysers” (hot springs), the world’s youngest island, Surtsey (formed as a result of underwater volcanic eruptions between 1963 and 1967), or walk on dried-up lava streams that resemble lunar landscapes.

As a marked contrast to the dramatic landscape with its ancient volcanoes, mountains, glaciers and scattered bushes and trees, Iceland was ranked as the most developed country in the world by the UN’s Human Development Index in 2007. The standard of living is amongst the highest in the world and there are great opportunities for shopping, eating out and cultural activities.

The tourism sector in Iceland offers a wide range of exciting outdoor activities such as whale-watching, glacier tours, horseback riding, skiing, hiking, kayaking, river rafting, fishing and bathing in natural hot springs.
